 Background:

I was born in St. Augustine Florida and grew up in Muskegon Michigan.  My dad was a meat cutter, and my mom stayed home and worked as a housewife and parent.  I have one older brother, Bob Armstrong, who lives in Colorado and is an industrial arts teacher.  He has been married for over 25 years and has two grown children and a grand child.  My father was a veteran of World War II and passed away in 1992.  My family provided love and guidance and are the inspiration in my life.  My mom passed away in 2006.  I love living in Northern Michigan and participating in as many outdoor activities as I can find the time to enjoy.    I have been married for nineteen years and my Mother and Father – in – law also live in the city of Harbor Springs.  We are very lucky to have each other.

I have participated in many activities encouraging individuals in society to be inclusive in there approach to life.  SPIRIT Recreation is one such effort, since the summer of 1984 SPIRIT Day Camp has attempted to provide a vehicle for individuals with physical and mental challenges to participate in community activities, events, and to engage in the arts, music, and sports.  It is truly a community effort at the grass roots level, with interagency and community support from hundreds of individuals.

In the past I was a member of the Petoskey Lions, and the Petoskey Junior Chamber of Commerce, the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, VSA Arts, the Special Populations Committee at North Central Michigan College, Northern Michigan Regional Coordinating Committee, Local president for the Council for Exceptional Children, co – chairman of Petoskey High Schools Teaching and Learning Council and various other organizations to promote acceptance of special populations in all facets of society.

Currently I am working on the board with Challenge Mountain, active as the V.P. of the Petoskey Education Association, special education department head at Petoskey High School, involved with the school improvement committee at the high school, and working as an assistant manager at the Pirate’s Cove Adventure Golf.  I continue to serve on the Northern Michigan Transition Council.
